I've posted the question to a few groups and have not yet heard any replies.

(!) Actually I looked into it a bit more --- read the Linux Kernel Mailing List FAQ at http://www.tux.org/lkml and you'll find that this is a known problem between the new kernels and an older version if 'ifconfig' --- update your binaries as recommended in the LKML.FAQ.
